about

The HNW Netlabel welcomes you to its third 'themed' compilation, following on from the Crackling Armageddon and the Caterwauling compilations which saw sounds gather around the phenomenon of crackle worship and cat worship - now we look to what is perhaps the most contradictory-seeming thematic perspective within wall noise, walls to heal and soothe the listeners ears. Walls to become immersed in and wrapped in meditation and contemplation. Walls to sleep soundly to, to intently study to and to generally better oneself to.

The artists in this compilation were given something of a strict criteria for submissions - walls had to be relaxing and meditative, and yet, this could be a subjective viewpoint and reception of this thematic starting point, and as such there is still a very surprising amount of variety amongst the wall noise here. Suffice to say, some of it is indeed blaring, maximal and yes indeed it is harsh - whereas many other artists have settled on lower-mixed, texture-focused walls and the altogether different tack of ambient noise wall, which very clearly suits the thematic parameters. It is nice to see a combination of precisely ambient walls of noise, and walls of noise which are harsh, dissonant and jarring from one angle - but given another few angles, and you can end up finding something incredibly meditative and soothing in them also. It is perhaps these middle-ground walls which the compilation was most interested in highlighting, to further look into the contradiction most HNW listeners routinely face explaining - of how something so dissonant could, seemingly through minimalism alone, spin around and take on qualities which align it so much with the harmonious.

There is also a welcome and large amount of what some artists have been referring to as 'lowercase' noise wall - often taking textural sounds which are usually very small and minimal in real, daily life and sculpting and layering these into a wall of sound (often forming ANW rather than HNW). I would like to personally thank all of the artists to be involved with this compilation, I could never have expected it would generate such interest in the space of a month alone. I would also like to specifically thank Sergey Pakhomov for the stunning album artwork for the compilation (a very skilled and masterful edit of a skeletal idea I had on very little steam!), it suits the sounds contained within perfectly.

I've sadly not had the time to compile a list of artist links and bios but if you search any given project name alongside the term 'bandcamp' you can usually find their base of operations via this means. It may also please you to know that many of the artists and projects who appear here and do not appear in the HNW catalogue to date have been submitting solo releases for the near-future, which I am very excited about putting out!

Many Rumbling Thanks and Love,
Even More Crackling Trance-like Immersion,

James Shearman
