about

Ashtabula is derived from ashtepihale, which means ‘always enough fish to be shared around’ in the Lenape language, The city became an important destination on the Underground Railroad in the middle 19th century when it was used by refugee slaves when taking ships to Canada and freedom.
The word Ashtabula is also used as an American slag word meaning ‘blemish’, ‘flaw’ or ‘ugly ass’.

Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in most ecosystems and may form 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats. Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study.

This track was recorded in April 2020 during the Covid-19 epidemic lockdown.
